Symbiosis Law School, Pune, a constituent of Symbiosis International (Deemed University) has organized the inaugural of SLS PUNE Pro Bono Club (Nyaya Bandhu Scheme, Department of Justice, Government of India) and will impart the training session and capacity building for Para-legal volunteers (PLVs), DLSA, Pune On 4th May, 2022 from 9:00 AM to 3:00PM at PDCLE Hall. Symbiosis Law School, Pune is the first private law school from the State of Maharashtra and the only one in Pune to have been nominated among 29 law schools to house the Pro Bono Club under the Nyaya Bandhu Scheme of Department of Justice, Govt of India. The Club aims to create legal awareness literacy among the marginalized members of the society in collaborations with NGOs, conducting legal aid camps/clinics, providing legal consultancy and legal aid services to beneficiaries, and assisting Pro Bono Advocates registered under the Nyaya Bandhu platform among several other activities. In pursuance to the aim of the club The Department of Justice, Ministry of Law and Justice invited the faculties and the students to share their opinions and thoughts.

The event will begin with the Welcome Address being delivered by Dr. Shashikala Gurpur, Fulbright Scholar, Jean Monnet Chair Professor (EU-LAMP co- funded by EU) Director, SLS-P, Dean Faculty of Law, SIU. Dr. Gurpur shall be elaborating the functioning of the Pro Bono club in synergy with the Community Legal Care and Literacy Cell of SLS- P which is a co-curricular cell that has been in vogue for 3 decades. Since 2007, such network, legal aid, legal assistance, and DLSA collaboration, the cell has addressed more than 100 cases, 2 legal aid clinics, numerous NGO collaborations, literacy sessions, and over 10 Lok Adalat collaborations among others. Through these Adalats, the active participation of over 40 faculty members accompanied by over 1000 students have helped developed the portfolio into ancillary topics of helping the community in contemporary issues of caste or death certifications, and digital assistance among many others in furtherance of our fundamental objective of enhancing easier access to justice to all.

The Chief Guest for the event will be Mr. Sanjay Deshmukh, Principal District Judge, Pune Chairman, District Legal Services Authority Pune who will be inaugurating the SLS Pro Bono Club. The event shall further be graced by the legal luminaries namely Ms. Mahima Khera, Program. Associate, Representative of Ministry of Law and Justice, Government of India, Mr. Pratap Sawant, Secretary, District Legal Service Authority, Pune, Advocate Rhishikesh Ganu, Senior Advocate with District and Session Court, Pune, Advocate Yashpal Purohit, Empaneled Advocate with District Legal Service Authority, Pune.

The Inaugural ceremony shall also witness an ?Award Distribution?. The Divine Ratna Awards 2022 will be awarded by Mr. Rajesh Oswal, Director, Pushpak Steel Industries Pvt. Ltd. and Mr. Sanket Shah, Founder President, Divine Jain Group Trust, Pune. In addition to this a Capacity building Training session for 160 Para Legal Volunteers (PLVs) will be conducted over the course of two sessions. It is the first time that city-based Law college faculties and students also have been nominated as PLVs. The Pro Bono Club will comprise of Dr. Shashikala Gurpur as chairperson and other members of the club viz Dr. Shirish Kulkarni, Assistant Professor, SLS-P, Dr. Ashish Deshpande, Assistant Professor, SLS-P, Advocate Sangramjeet Chavan, Advocate Chaitraly Deshmukh, and Mr. Yogesh Dharangutti, Assistant Professor, SLS-P.
