Microsoft big investment in volumetric capture and AI technology is starting to pay off. During Microsoft Inspire conference in Las Vegas they revealed the newest application of holograms and their Azure AI technologies in the workplace. Julia White, a company representative for Azure, was giving a keynote when suddenly she was transformed into a stage human sized hologram. While this might not be considered new what happened next definitely showcased their long term developments in 3D communication and steps towards one global language.
The digital twin of the speaker translated the keynote in perfect Japanese. The Microsoft AI and neural text-to-speech technologies made this possible. Whites?s real voice was used in order to create personalised voice of the hologram. White explained: ?We used mixed reality technology to create my hologram and render it live. Then, we used Azure?s speech detect capability and English transcription to get my speech, then used Azure translate to get the speech into Japanese and finally, applied neural text to speech technology so it sounded exactly like me, just speaking Japanese.?

Taking into consideration that microsoft volumetric capture is not available to everyone it would be unrealistic to think that this technology will be commercially released any time soon. In addition, the Hololens 2 comes with a price tag of $3,500 which makes it harder to see how it could be used in events like conferences. However, the possibilities showcased definitely spark imagination about the future of communication, education and international business. Moreover, there are smaller companies like EF EVE https://ef-eve.com/volumetric-capture/ making this technology available to a wider audience.
