Videocon Sets up Telecom lab in Chitkara University, to Create job Opportunities

GSM service provider Videocon Telecom that operates in six telecom circles with more than 7 million subscribers has set up an advanced lab in Punjab's Chitkara University for technologies encompassing CDMA, wireless broadband and FTTH with an initial investment of Rs 15 lakh.

"We established a lab in Chitkara University in last year to impart practical technical knowledge on latest telecom technologies such as wireless broadband, CDMA, GSM and FTTH (fibre-to-the-home) to students," Videocon Telecommunications chief executive Arvind Bali told ET.


The telco is also planning a robust spend on skill development and is expected to enter into strategic pacts with leading institutions across operating circles as well as with the Telecom Sector Skill Council (TSSC).


"We are in the process of signing up Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Telecom Sector Skill Council for skill development to create job opportunities for students in the fast-growing telecom industry," Bali informed.


The telco, as a part of government-driven ambitious initiatives like Digital India and Smart City program, have made extensive plans for developing skills and creating a talent pool.


As a part of CSR initiative, Videocon is also working to enter into a similar partnership with Thapar University in Patiala, and has recently in November 2015 also established a lab in Punjab Engineering College.


"We have identified some other institutions across our operating circles wherein we will be establishing similar labs for the students to get handy knowledge on various telecom technologies," Bali added.


Videocon is also planning to leverage a section of its senior-level staff across network, transmission, IT and business development domains to visit these institutions on a regular basis for guest lectures on new technology trends.


The telecom lab in Chitkara University is well-equipped for live simulation environment and to impart practical technical knowledge to the students and faculty of Chitkara University.


The Venugopal Dhoot-owned company holds liberalized spectrum in the 1800 MHz band in UP-East, UP-West, Bihar, Gujarat, MP and Haryana telecom circles that can be used to offer fourth-generation or 4G services.
