Lower Doses of Radiation May Help Prostate Cancer Patients

Decatur, TX ? While higher doses of radiation have proven very effective in treating medium- to high-risk prostate cancer cases, lower risk cases might benefit from a less aggressive approach. That?s according to a recently released study that found lowering the dose in lower risk cases doesn?t alter survivability chances, but it does lessen side effect risks.

?The new study is casting the light on potential benefits of a less-is-more approach that could benefit men without decreasing their survival chances,? explains Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at the North Texas Cancer Center at Wise. ?This is excellent news for men who want to take a more proactive approach in fighting low-risk forms of the disease without dramatically increasing treatment side effect risks.?

The study from Penn Medicine showed that already-high survivability rates for low-risk forms of the disease were not impacted when radiation doses were lowered. To arrive at their findings, doctors used data from the National Cancer Database. The study compared the survival rates of 42,481 men who either received a standard dose of radiation or a higher dose. While higher doses increased survival in medium- and high-risk cases, there was no difference found between low and high doses in men with low-risk forms of the disease. The findings, researchers say, indicate that radiation should be personalized based on the patient?s unique case. When lower doses are called for, the result can also include lessened toxicity chances and greater protection of healthy tissues, including those found in the rectum and bowel.

?What it all comes down to is a need for men and their doctors to carefully review risks and all potential treatment options,? Dr. Echt says. ?Men who are diagnosed with prostate cancer are urged to discuss the pros and cons of every available treatment with their oncologists. Second opinions can also prove helpful in ensuring the best course of action is selected for treatment.?
