Rare Anaplasmosis Case in a Young Calf Highlights the Value of Early Diagnosis and Supportive Veterinary Care

A case report published in the Uttar Pradesh Journal of Zoology, titled “Therapeutic Management of Anaplasmosis in a Cattle Calf: A Rare Case,” documents clinically significant bovine anaplasmosis in a 1.5-month-old calf—an unusual presentation because calves below one year of age generally develop milder disease or show no obvious clinical signs. The report describes how rapid clinical assessment, microscopic blood examination and targeted treatment were associated with marked improvement within 10 days, highlighting the importance of considering tick-borne disease even in very young cattle presenting with fever, anaemia and weakness.

A Tick-Borne Disease with Serious Consequences

Bovine anaplasmosis is caused mainly by Anaplasma marginale, a microorganism that infects red blood cells. The disease is commonly transmitted by ticks, although blood-contaminated instruments and blood-feeding insects can also contribute to transmission. In affected cattle, destruction of red blood cells can lead to severe anaemia, fever, breathing difficulty, weakness, reduced productivity and, in severe cases, death.
Young calves are generally considered less likely than adult cattle to develop severe clinical disease. This makes the reported case particularly noteworthy. According to the study, the calf was only 1.5 months old and showed poor appetite, lethargy, rapid breathing, respiratory distress, excessive tearing and head pressing. Its rectal temperature reached 105.6°F, while examination also revealed pale mucous membranes—an important sign of anaemia.

Key Findings

Laboratory examination provided strong evidence of a blood-parasite infection. A Giemsa-stained blood smear revealed organisms consistent with A. marginale, while blood testing showed substantial anaemia. Before treatment, the calf had a red blood cell count of 3.6 million/µL, haemoglobin of 4 g/dL and packed cell volume of 19.8%.

The veterinary team treated the calf with long-acting oxytetracycline, together with supportive care including fluids, haematinics, multivitamins, folic acid and cyanocobalamin. After 10 days, the calf showed clear clinical improvement and the follow-up blood smear was negative for A. marginale. Blood parameters had also improved, although haemoglobin and red blood cell levels had not yet fully returned to normal, so continued nutritional and haematinic support was advised.

Why the Case Matters

The report carries a practical message for veterinarians and livestock owners: age alone should not rule out anaplasmosis when a calf presents with fever, anaemia, weakness or respiratory signs, particularly in areas where tick-borne diseases are common.

The case also reinforces the usefulness of basic diagnostic tools. Microscopic examination of a properly stained blood smear remains a relatively accessible way to detect blood-borne organisms in clinically affected animals, especially where advanced molecular testing may not be immediately available.
Preventive management is equally important. The authors emphasise tick control and hygienic livestock practices as measures that may reduce the risk of future infections.

How the Case Was Investigated

Veterinarians combined clinical examination with a complete blood count, faecal examination and microscopic evaluation of a Giemsa-stained blood smear. The faecal test was negative for internal parasites, helping narrow the diagnostic focus. Treatment response was assessed clinically and through repeat blood examination after 10 days.

The authors caution, however, that this was a single case report, not a controlled treatment study. Molecular confirmation such as PCR and serological testing was not performed, meaning species-level identification relied on microscopic interpretation. The findings therefore should not be interpreted as proof of treatment effectiveness across the wider cattle population.

Looking Ahead

The case supports greater clinical awareness of anaplasmosis in young calves and underlines the value of combining physical examination with laboratory testing. Future studies involving larger numbers of animals and molecular confirmation could help clarify how frequently clinically significant anaplasmosis occurs in very young calves and which management strategies produce the most reliable outcomes.
