March 2023: There are plenty of leagues around the world that claim to be the biggest and best, but which one generates the most revenue?
Given the noise made by the Premier League you would be forgiven for thinking it tops the list, but England’s top football competition has plenty of rivals for that particular accolade.
A new study from Total Sports has crunched the numbers to reveal which league/sport has the highest annual sponsorship revenue.
The report also analyses several other metrics including which league/sport has the highest average global broadcast viewership, which has the highest average attendance and more.
The NFL is king of the hill for sponsorship and broadcast revenues
If you want a lesson in how to generate massive amounts of sponsorship income, look no further than the National Football League (NFL).
The NFL generates more annual sponsorship income than the Olympic Games and World Cup, and leaves the likes of the NBA and Premier League trailing in its wake.
Formula 1 surprisingly fails compete with the other leagues and sports for sponsorship, with its annual $434 million revenue leaving the series miles adrift.
The Highest Annual Sponsorship Revenues:
Broadcasters splash the cash to secure NFL rights
The NFL rakes in a whopping $10 billion annually in broadcast revenue – more than three times as much as the NBA.
The league’s annual broadcast revenue is all the more noteworthy given that the NFL season only runs from September to early February.
F1 trails the rest of the pack in terms of broadcast income, although increases levels of interest in the series from North America and the Middle East could boost the future numbers.
