March 2023 – OBEETEE Carpets, a leading hand-woven rug company, has successfully concluded its 30-day weaver training program for women artisans of Ladakh. The training program was a government-led initiative to empower women artisans in Ladakh and provide them with an opportunity to learn new skills during the winter season, when they have downtime from household work.
The training program was divided into two parts, with 15 days of training conducted in Leh and another 15 days in Kargil. The local artisans knew only Tibetan weaving, and OBEETEE Carpets' master weavers trained them in Tibetan knotting techniques.
Kanhaiya Lal, OBEETEE Carpets' Tibetan master weaver, and Ramesh Maurya, OBEETEE Carpets' Persian weaver, led the training program. They shared their expertise and knowledge with the women artisans, who were eager to learn and improve their weaving skills.
The training program aimed to create a community of skilled artisans who could produce high-quality, hand-woven rugs that meet international standards. Through this program, OBEETEE Carpets hopes to support the local economy of Ladakh and provide sustainable employment opportunities for women artisans.
"We are delighted to have completed this 30-day training program for women artisans of Ladakh," said Angelique Dhama, CEO, OBEETEE Carpets Retail. "It was a fulfilling experience to witness the eagerness and enthusiasm of the women to learn new techniques and improve their weaving skills. We are confident that this training will help them create beautiful, hand-woven rugs that meet international standards and provide them with sustainable livelihoods."
