Giving a practical exposure to its students, MM(DU)?s Maharishi Markandeshwar Engineering College organized an AICTE-sponsored study tour to Atal Tunnel in Rohtang in Himachal Pradesh from October 18th to 22nd. The tour was organized for the students of 5th and 7th semester of Civil Engineering Department and was sponsored by AICTE under Youth Undertaking Visit For Acquiring Knowledge (YUVAK) Scheme. This group of 11 students was led by faculty members.
The tour also included a meeting with Boarder road of organization (BRO) on Oct 20, 2021 at their Solang valley Camp office during which Lt. Sunny explained the structural design, difficulties faced during construction, various salient features of the tunnel and about advanced engineering tools/equipments used. The students were amazed to know that this 9.02 km long tunnel bypasses the Rohtang Pass on the Manali-Leh Highway and provides all-weather connectivity to the Lahaul Spiti Valley and northern India while reducing travel distance by 47 km and travel times by up to four hours. The tunnel is now the world?s longest one at an altitude of over 10,000 feet.
The students were also made aware about the telecommunication facility in the tunnel every 150 m, fire hydrant every 60 m, emergency exit every 500m, turning cavern every 2.2 km, air quality monitoring every one km, broadcasting system and automatic incident detection system with CCTV cameras every 250 meters.

A visit from south portal of Atal tunnel to north portal of Atal tunnel was held for the students. It was a very successful tour and made the students aware about the unique features of this tunnel which included an emergency escape tunnel under the main tunnel. This would provide an emergency exit in case of any untoward incident which may render the main tunnel unusable. The bridges over rivers on the approach to the tunnel from both the portals have also been completed. Snow galleries have also been built at the approach road to the tunnel from Manali side to ensure all-weather connectivity.
