In furtherance of the last five years of Symbiosis Law School Pune?s work in the Yerawada prison and initiative by Hon'ble Chancellor Dr. S. B. Mujumdar, SLSP (a constituent of Symbiosis International (Deemed University)) is proud to announce a One Day Law & Policy E-Round Table Discussion, with special focus on Delayed Justice to Prisoners in India: Issues & Challenges, on the 8th of May, 2021 from 2P.M ? 5 P.M. IST.

The roundtable aims to highlight the issues of inmates languishing in the jails of India and to propose recommendations in the form of an outcome document. The roundtable is specially curated to discuss and deliberate upon various contemporary socio-legal areas along with core issues in prisons across India. It will offer a unique opportunity to the audience to enrich themselves through two plenary sessions involving esteemed resource persons such as academicians, advocates and law enforcement officers of national repute.
The event will commence with the Inaugural Ceremony at 2 P.M where Mr. Srijan Pal Singh, Founder of A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Centre, Delhi (Head Office), and Author, will be the Guest of Honor. The ceremony will also be graced by Dr. S. B. Mujumdar, Chancellor, Symbiosis International (Deemed University), and Moderated by Dr. Shashikala Gurpur, Fulbright Scholar, Dean, Faculty of Law, SIU, Director, Symbiosis Law School, Pune.
Adv. Sangramjeet Chavan, Ms. Aditi Mane, Ms. Chaitraly Deshmukh from the Community legal care centre and literacy Cell (CLCL Team), SLS Pune will present a Point- Position Paper statically representing the data aligned with the main theme of the roundtable discussion.

The Roundtable Discussion is divided into 2 Plenary Sessions on different themes.

Plenary Session 1 will focus on the theme of ?Discussion on International Law, Comparative Law and Policy Approaches to Problems and Issues faced by Innocent Prisoners Languishing in the Jail?. The Chief Guest for the Session will be Justice (Retd.) Dr. Shalini Phansalkar Joshi, Bombay High Court, Mumbai. The distinguished panel will include, Mr. Sunil Chauhan, Director NALSA, Dr. S.C. Raina, Former Vice-Chancellor, HPNLU, Simla, Dr. Arvind Tiwari, Dean of School of Law, Rights and Constitutional Governance, TISS, Mumbai, Mr. Srijan Pal Singh, Founder of A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Centre, Delhi (Head Office), and Author, Dr. Anirban Chakraborty, Associate Professor, NALSAR and Mr. Bhushan Kumar Upadhya, IPS Officer, (D.G. Prisons and D.G. State Traffic Branch, State of Maharashtra).

Plenary Session 2 will be on the theme ?Discussion on Analysis of Data, Case Studies and Global/Indian Best Practices on Innocent Prisoners Lingering in the Jails in India based on Empirical Studies including Prison Courts and Clinics?. Dr. Kiran Bedi, Retd. IPS Officer, Former Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry, and Social Activist will grace the Session as the Chief Guest. The resource persons on the panel will include Mr. Srijan Pal Singh, Founder of A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Centre, Delhi (Head Office), and Author, Dr. Arvind Tiwari, Dean of School of Law, Rights and Constitutional Governance, TISS, Adv. S. K. Jain, Criminal Law Advocate, Pune, Mr. Bhushan Kumar Upadhya, IPS Officer, (D.G. Prisons and D.G. State Traffic Branch, State of Maharashtra), Dr. Harish Shetty, Mental Health Expert, Mr. Sunil Chauhan, Director NALSA and Ms. Monica Dhawan, Director of the Prison Programme, India Vision Foundation.

The discussion lead by the invited experts in the field will impart a crucial and profound perspective on the subject matter of prison reform. Different aspects of the topic will be covered comprehensively allowing for a holistic understanding of the matter.

Upon the completion of both Plenaries, the Concluding Remarks which will highlight the Outcomes and Resolutions of the Roundtable will be delivered by Dr. Shashikala Gurpur, Director, SLS, Pune, Dean, Faculty of Law, Symbiosis International (Deemed University) and Dr. Atmaram Shelke, Associate Professor, SLS-P.
