Greater Noida, New Delhi September 08, 2011: Sharda Hospital, a super specialty hospital run by Sharda Group of Institutions (SGI), has hit another milestone. The doctors of Sharda Hospital have recently performed a rare feat by removing a malignant tumor from the body of Mrs. Prabha, a middle-aged women suffering from a rare form of pancreatic cancer. The malignancy had affected the patient's pancreas and adjoining areas of the body including duodenum (first section of small intestine) and gall bladder.

The operation was successfully undertaken by a dedicated team of doctors under the guidance of Dr. P. L. Kariholu (Medical Superintendent, Sharda Hospital). Known in medical parlance as Whipple Operation, the complex surgery was performed to save the woman's life who was also suffering from severe jaundice. Due to the latter's presence, and also the occurrence of chronic pancreatic (swelling of pancreas), the patient's condition was declared critical by the doctors. It took more than four hours to complete the Whipple Operation.

According to Dr. P. L. Kariholu, Medical Superintendent Sharda Hospital, "It was a challenging case for us. Mrs. Prabha's condition was critical when she was referred to us. The team of expert doctors at Sharda Hospital decided to remove her cancerous tumor through Whipple Operation. The surgery was a long one and involved a lot of risk as the patient was also suffering from severe jaundice that in turn complicated her case. It is a remarkable achievement for us especially because the patient has responded well and shown remarkable recovery. She has in face gained 3-4 kgs of weight and is now suitable to take chemotherapy as part of ensuing medical treatment."

In the Whipple Operation the head of the pancreas, a portion of the bile duct, the gallbladder and the duodenum are removed. Occasionally a portion of the stomach may also be removed. After removal of these structures the remaining pancreas, bile duct and the intestine are sutured back into the intestine to direct the gastrointestinal secretions back into the gut.
