Researchers Find 5 Different Types of Prostate Cancer

As the quest for a greater understanding of prostate cancer continues, researchers may have unlocked the key to developing more highly targeted, effective treatments. Their findings indicate that prostate cancer may not have a singular type. Rather, five distinct types may exist, each potentially benefitting from their own treatment protocols.

"While much more study needs to be done before the findings can have real-world applications in treatment, they mark an important step forward in research," explains Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at the Prostate Seed Institute." Dr. Echt is referring to a recent study conducted by Cancer Research UK. Researchers there looked at a group of 259 men who had tested positive for prostate cancer. Samples from the men were studied to determine if genetic differences existed. As it turned out, they did.

Men in the study were broken up into different groups based on the genetic differences found in their tumor samples. The men were then given targeted treatments designed for their specific types of prostate cancer. The findings are significant in that 100 different genes associated with prostate cancer were uncovered. Prior to the study, only six genes had been linked to prostate cancer.

The findings, researchers say, are giving them a better understanding of prostate cancer and the genes that may cause it. In turn, the discovery of five types may one day lead to major advancements in targeted treatment.

"Men who are diagnosed with prostate cancer will find a number of targeted treatments do exist today that are based on the stage of cancer they have," says Dr. Echt. "These findings may eventually lead to treatments that are even more highly targeted based on an individual patient's type of prostate cancer and stage."
