The Maritime province of Newfoundland and Labrador, has within two years of releasing its strategy of immigration has met the application targets, it had set for the year 2022. The province is being overwhelmed with applications for its provincial nominee program and is facing a surplus of immigration. It is expected to take in more than 1,700 immigrants three years before its target date. Earlier than expected.
In the year 2017 the provincial government of the maritime region had stated that they would be seeing an increase of 50 per cent in immigrants each year by the year 2022. The statistics are based on the immigration rate seen in the year 2015, when more than 1000 Canada PR visas were issued. This would mean that, they need just 600 more immigrants to enter the province in order to meet the target set for 2022.

The province of Newfoundland and Labrador has employed five Immigration Program Development Officers who have been specially trained to handle the large influx of applications. The federal as well as provincial governments have planned to make changes to their immigration strategy to meet with the challenges of increased immigration. More details would probably be released later in the year.
The retention rate of immigrants for the province is also above normal as per the statistics Canada report, which sets the rate at 51 percent. In simple terms, this means that more than half of the people immigrating to the province have chosen to stay back. The province is boosting its immigration efforts in order to address its problem of labor shortage. It is expected that without a fresh influx of immigrants,
