Oxford University Press and Hope Kolkata Foundation to support digital literacy for girl students in Kolkata

Kolkata, Friday, March 8, 2019: Oxford University Press (OUP), the world?s largest university press, has helped to set up a computer center within the premises of the Hope Kolkata Foundation run Kasba Girl?s shelter home in the city. The initiative will help girl students to become computer literate and digitally savvy.

The computer center will also be used by children residing in other Hope Foundation homes in Kolkata. In addition to proficiency in computers the girl students will also undergo English language and personality development classes towards becoming confident and well-groomed future professionals.

Speaking about this initiative on the occasion of the International Women?s Day, Mr. Sivaramakrishnan Venkateswaran, Managing Director, Oxford University Press India said: ?Digital education is fundamental to any modern education curriculum and we are delighted to be able to provide girls at the Kasba Shelter home a chance to become proficient with computers. I am delighted that this initiative comes on this special day, when we celebrate the pioneering role of women in our personal and professional lives. I am confident that Hope Kolkata Foundation and the girl students of Kasba Shelter home will benefit from this facility.?

Speaking at the inauguration event, Geeta Vendakrishnan, Director, Hope Kolkata Foundation said, The story of women\'s struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organization but to the collective efforts of all those who care about women and their well-being. The support extended by Oxford University Press towards this initiative will help our girl students become proficient in computers, English language and more confident individuals paving way for more girl power.?

OUP has been working with Hope Kolkata Foundation for last two years to support several learning initiatives at its centers. In 2017, a reading room was set up at the Asher Alo Girl?s shelter home in Madurdah in Kolkata & last year, OUP organized workshops on teacher professional development for over 40 Hope Kolkata Foundation teachers.
