21 Live Spine Surgeries Mark the Live Spine Surgery Course Hosted by ISIC

Taking the spinal surgery training to the next level, Indian Spinal Injuries Centre hosted the 2nd edition of Association of Spine Surgeons of India (ASSI) Spine Surgery Course in partnership with Spinal Cord Society. The event put to display for training of hundreds of participating surgeons 21 live surgeries spanning over three days.


New Delhi, 21st June 2018: Top spine surgeons of the country gathered at the Indian Spinal Injuries Centre, who played host to the 2nd edition of Live Spine Surgery Course in association with Association of Spine Surgeons of India (ASSI) and Spinal Cord Society.  


In the presence of hundreds of esteemed surgeons and specialists of the field, Dr. Raghav Dutt, President ASSI who along with Major HPS Ahluwalia, Chairman, Indian Spinal Injuries Centre, and Dr H S Chhabra’ Chief of Spine Service & Medical Director, Indian Spinal Injuries Centre, inaugurated the conference, as a three-day exchange of knowledge, experience and expertise began at New Delhi.  


 We are happy to be the hosts of the 2nd edition of Live Spine Surgery Course and for partnering with ASSI who have been our important collaborators and supporters in organizing major events related to spine, orthopedics, and many more specialized fields. The event has witnessed huge participation from colleagues across India and has provided a major learning opportunity for delegates to gain lessons from eminent names of the field. Such continuous endeavors are vital for passing of knowledge, experience and skill training to the next generation for the larger benefit of the citizens of the country.” Dr H S Chhabra’ Chief of Spine Service & Medical Director, Indian Spinal Injuries Centre said.


Over 250 spine surgeons participated in the conference, with 21 Live Spine Surgeries on display during the Conference conducted by the experts in the field for training the next generation of specialists.  The live surgeries covered various aspects including deformity and deformity correction, cervical laminectomy, minimally invasive spine (MIS) transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF), cervical laminoplasty, kyphoplasty, open TLIF, kyphotic deformity correction surgery, transforaminal endoscopic discectomy, Pott’s spine, MIS discectomy and LCS decompression, among others


Several burning topics including the various dilemmas and challenges faced by a surgeon while managing complicated cases of spinal injuries were brought to fore, as experts of the field debated various aspects of such situations amidst the larger audience. 


Highlighting the complexity of cases faced by surgeons of the field, Dr. Raghav Dutt, President ASSI said, “India has one of the higher prevalence of spinal injury cases in the world owing to its large population, but more importantly, the increasing trends of rush, negligence, and lack of respect for safety rules. As a result, the nature of injuries witnessed by the surgeons across the nation is highly complex. It is but natural that the experts have to take carefully deliberated calls and sharing of experience is critical to enhance the understanding of one and all in such cases.”


Apart from debating on multiple aspects of spine surgery, the conference also included 13 video training sessions, various case discussions, and recent trends in neuromonitoring and other methods of making patients more self-dependent.
