New Delhi, 11th  June, 2018: Commemorating the 53rd anniversary of Chairman, Major Major HPS Ahluwalia’s summit of Mt. Everest in 1965, Indian Spinal Injuries Centre today launched the Hindi version of his autobiographical book ‘Higher Than Everest: Memoirs of a Mountaineer’. Having scaled Mount Everest at the age of 26, Major Ahluwalia suffered a gunshot in Indo-Pak war of 1965, and was left paralyzed below waist, confined to a wheelchair forever. His life experiences have been accounted in this book.

“This book is for everyone who scales mountains, whether on Earth or inside their minds. It is dedicated to the people facing disabilities like the one I incurred during the Indo-Pak War in 1965, shortly after climbing Mt Everest. I am very touched the way everyone responded to the English version of the book and hope to receive the same love for the Hindi version. Books and education contribute in building character of the people and in turn plays a vital role in building the character of the nation. India needs her youth to grow strong and learned. I hope I was able to share some of my knowledge and experience as learning, while trying to persuade them audience to never give up in the pursuit of their goals”, says Major HPS Ahluwalia, Chairman, ISIC.

Despite the disability, Major HPS Ahluwalia has participated actively in organizing pioneering mountaineering events and expeditions, one of which was exploring the silk route, accounted in his other book “Tracing Marco Polo’s Journey: The Silk Route.” In ‘Higher Than Everest: Memoirs of a Mountaineer’, he provides an inspiring narrative which not only connects with the higher spirit but on many occasions makes one cry, both in happiness and pain. As per many critics, it is not an ordinary run of the mill book and assumes high emotional and spiritual intelligence
