Sygma Solutions is the leading UK provider of utility location training courses in the UK and is pleased to announce that it can now provide training at any location in the UK. Sygma Solutions is an independent training provider that helps staff learn how to detect and locate all types of underground cables and utilities using the very latest CAT 4 and Genny 4 radio-detection locators and equipment.

The training that is provided is very much ?hands on? and is far from basic ?text book? training. Nonetheless, it is presented in a manner which is easy to understand and suitable for operators of all abilities. The course includes such things as the reasons for using detectors ? both the safety aspect and the financial one of damage to utilities; how to read and understand utility plans; the limitations of detectors; and, of course, practical work using the receivers and transmitters.

Multiple Utilities

The training also covers such things as how to deal with multiple utilities; identification of utilities; location of bends and junctions; service connections; measurement of the depth of cables and pipes; simple ways to locate street lighting cables; locating through reinforced concrete; and care and maintenance of the equipment that is used.

This location training is based on practical experience of manufacturing such equipment and knowing how and why it works, along with the limitations. The staff also has practical experience of real life situations mapping utilities together with problem solving, and the extensive knowledge of what equipment to use in any given situation.

In addition, courses include how to understand and interpret buried service plans (also known as STATS). Operatives are also taught electromagnetic theory and how and why a cable and pipe locator works, along with helpful tips and tricks, and includes a section on things that the equipment is unable to detect.

Health And Safety

The health and safety aspect is also important, and operatives learn about HSG47 which outlines the dangers of working with or near underground services. This covers the dangers of things such as gas pipes and electric cables, how to plan the work that is to be carried out on the site, safe excavation, how to deal with pipes and cables buried in concrete, the use of protective clothing, safe systems of work for trenchless methods, and much more.

A course is also offered on CAT 4 and Genny 4 cable location. CAT is an abbreviation for Cable Avoidance Tool, while Genny means Signal Generator. CAT 4 instruction covers interpretation of the signal and how to locate service joints, changes of direction and/or depth, and Strike Alert - an overview of its? uses and how to disable it.

Genny 4 instruction covers the benefits of dual frequency, different applications, and how to use the Genny 4 to locate small and/or non-earthed cables using capacitance; how to effectively earth the Genny 4 using different methods including earth positioning; and blind induction search and effective nulling of services.

Operatives attending these courses will also learn how to use the CAT Manager software and how to analyse the CAT 4 recorded data.

On-Site Training

On-site training includes the importance of carrying out visual site checks before beginning any location work, in addition to using service plans and existing site information showing the indicated placement of buried services and mains.

After operatives have completed classroom instruction and carried out on-site training, they will then return to the classroom where they will be assessed in a written paper. The pass mark is a minimum of 70%. However, operatives who may suffer from reading difficulties or dyslexia may be offered an oral exam.

On-site assessment is also carried out, when operatives are marked on their ability to locate and mark up buried services using all the modes of CAT 4 and Genny 4.

Sygma Solutions courses have been designed to cover every aspect of buried services and mains location and have been praised by many for teaching examples and application techniques that operatives had never seen before.

The company also supplies, services, and maintains the Mala range of Easy Locator equipment and is the only Mala approved service and repair centre in the UK.

About the Company: Sygma Solutioins offers buried utility location courses. The courses ranges from 1-day Cable location course to a 5-day utility Surveyor course.
