Narasaraopeta Engineering College Celebrates International Women’s Day

Narasaraopeta Engineering College (NEC), situated in the Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh, celebrated the International Women?s Day on March 8th, 2018, and commemorated the achievements of women in Education and Society.

NEC organised a special event to celebrate the Day, and invited several guest speakers to talk on gender parity and inclusiveness, the role of education in empowering women, and the initiatives the college is taking to enhance the lives of its female students.

The speakers at the event emphasised the need to change the traditional gender roles women are expected to satisfy, and that education was the only tool that would spur the change. According to them, one of the key areas of work within women?s empowerment is access to education.

Several regions in the developing world, especially in Asia, according to global censuses, still have accessibility issues. This can mean a lack of schools in the region or schools that are not affordable.

Censuses also reveal that several people in the rural parts of several countries are unwilling to enroll their female children in schools, and several people in both rural and urban areas are not willing to enroll their female children in higher education. This has caused the low percentage-share of women in Education and, consequently, in other sectors as well.

This low percentage-share, in turn, has resulted in the lower representation of women in socio-political and socio-economic spheres in the developing world. These numbers are also reflected in the employment rates in countries such as India.

However, the scenario has been changing rapidly over the years, with educators and educational institutions, such as Narasaraopeta Engineering College, coming forward to spread the values of gender equity, right to education, and right to equal opportunities for both women and men, even in regions that previously had little access to schools and colleges or people with the willingness to educate their female children.

Narasaraopeta Mandal Revenue Officer Vijaya Jyothi Kumari, who also attended the women?s day celebrations at the college, explained the revolutionary trends that are blurring gender roles and said that women, too, are capable of running enterprises, managing large teams, research, and even working in core engineering and scientific fields. Vice-chairman, Mr. M. Chakravarthi and Director, Mrs. M. Suhasini wished all the women attendees on this special occasion.
