Jalandhar: Faculty of Applied Medical Sciences at Lovely Professional University (LPU) organized national conference on ?Recent Trends in Biomedical Sciences (RTBS-2018). For this, 1500+ researchers, scientists, pathologists, and medical service providers from 50+ Institutions across India gathered at Shanti Devi Mittal Auditorium to share knowledge and advances made in their respective fields with medical students at LPU. The conference covered basic, medical & allied health sciences; clinical pathology; nursing; translational and clinical researches. One day conference remained entirely focussed on professional and ethical strategies for fulfilling contemporary needs of the society. The five sessions of the conference had display and presentations of 150 research papers, which are selected for publication in Scopus, indexed ?Asian Journal of Pharmaceutical and Clinical Research?. LPU Pro Chancellor Mrs Rashmi Mittal and Senior Dean Dr Monica Gulati welcomed the elite medical fraternity at the conference.

Addressing the massive medical fraternity on ?Evolution of Modern Science: Best is yet to be achieved?, keynote speaker Prof Dr Sarman Singh (Head Division of Clinical Microbiology & Molecular Medicine, AIIMS New Delhi) shared with all that his ?Success Mantra? is ?energy, hard-work and consistency?. Internationally acclaimed medical scientist with outstanding research and academic achievements in the field of infectious diseases, Dr Singh has saved thousands of lives from diseases and poverty. He holds: ?Think always of welfare work for the country and the global society, which benefits all the poor and downtrodden. I always focussed on developing more sensitive and cost-effective diagnostic methods for infectious diseases, particularly those that are difficult to diagnose and treat.?

Dr Singh?s such an illustrious success is in the field of two major killer infectious diseases- the kala-azar and tuberculosis. Thousands of poor used to die of these because the diagnostic methods were very costly for them to afford. The rapid test kit developed by him is highly cost-effective, and has played pivotal role in tackling this disease. His new inventions including the early diagnosis of tuberculosis and a mosquito proof cooler are also on the way of commercialization.

Similarly, Prof & Head of Clinical Haematology, at CMC (Ludhiana) Dr Joseph John informed about ?Bone Marrow (Stem cell) transplantation?; Emeritus Scientist at National Institute of Immunology (New Delhi) Dr Akhil C Banerjee guided on ?Microbes and Human Health?; and, Director & Head SAAOL Heart Centre (New Delhi) Dr Bimal Chhajer told all about ?Diet and Lifestyle for Prevention and Reversal of Heart Disease?.

LPU student participants at the conference shared: ?The conference has proved a boon for us as we have come to know much about our field, profession, duties and devotion. The high-profiled experts have explained all about fatal diseases and how to control them in initial stages in simple manners. We have come to know about antiviral approaches against viruses, heart attacks and early protection, parasitic diseases and stopping them to be epidemic, stem cell transplantation and more. Through this conference, we all are inspired to become an integral part of common diseases elimination programmes at national level.?

Applauding the values based latest invention against kala-azar (black-fever), one of the BAMS students Kavitha says: ?It is a matter of pride that the diagnosis of kala-azar can now be made at a cost of less than Rs. 50 per patient in India using ?Made in India? kits. These test kits are proving exceptionally accurate with 100% specificity and 98% sensitivity. In addition, this cutting edge technology is also saving millions of dollars of the Indian government every year on foreign exchange?.

Some of the prominent participant- institutions at the conference from New Delhi were Maulana Azad Medical College; National Institute of Malaria Research (ICMR); Department of Zoology at Delhi University; Kumaun university, Nainital; Hindu Sabha Hospital, Mumbai; Smt Tarawati Institute of Bio-Medical & Allied Sciences, Roorkee; and, many more from the states of UP, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Uttrakhand, Rajashthan, UT Chandigarh, Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir and more.
