The students and staff of South Nottingham College have voted to support the Teenage Cancer Trust for the current academic year.

Nottingham, UK, December 23, 2010 -- South Nottingham College has an ethos of introducing students to topics and life experiences that aren?t confined to the classroom. To that end, it recently introduced a campaign, ?Channeling Positivity?, spearheaded by a female staff and student duo who are attempting to swim the English Channel as a relay.

?Channeling Positivity? (http://www.channelingpositivity.com/ ) also aims to raise money for a charity, and staff and students from the College will be encouraged to get involved, in order to raise as much as possible. Therefore the senior management team at the College decided that if they were asking the whole College to get involved, then they should have a say in who they wanted to raise money for.

South Nottingham College (http://www.snc.ac.uk/ ) staff body were given 10 charities to shortlist, with the top 5 being put forward to a student vote. Over 300 students participated in the vote with the ?Teenage Cancer Trust? coming out as the most popular and therefore the charity to receive the money raised from Channeling Positivity.

Justine Drury, the staff member half of the duo, said ?All charities put forward were worthy causes. We wanted a charity that had a local impact and which both our staff and students could feel passionate about, and we think the Teenage Cancer Trust (http://www.teenagecancertrust.org/get-involved/as-...) is perfect. It has just launched a local campaign to build special wards for young cancer sufferers in the region?s hospitals, and anything we can do to help raise funds for such a worthwhile cause has got to be good.?

SNC Marketing Manager, Chris Stephenson explains more about why the voting took place: ?We think that Channeling Positivity is a campaign that all our students and staff could get involved with. Although Justine and Kate will ultimately be doing the actual Channel swim, there is so much more that our College community can add. To get everyone really fired up, we wanted them to have a say in which charity we supported ? after all, if we?re encouraging them to get out there and raise money, then we want them involved from the very beginning.?

About Us
South Nottingham College offers a range of further and higher education courses and training; including full time and part time course which are available weekday, evening and weekends. The college provides this across 5 sites within the Nottingham area: Bingham, Charnwood, Clifton, Ruddington & West Bridgford.

Justine Drury and Kate Vines, teacher and student swimming duo, are hoping to become the first female relay team from Nottingham to complete the channel swim. The swim can be anywhere between 19 and 33 miles long depending on the tide and shipping lanes. The pair were inspired by the Olympics and have therefore scheduled the swim for the 27th July 2011 ? a year to the day until the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics.
