Beer and animal lovers alike will love this one-of-a-kind beer event, set to take place on June 19th. To entice the thirsty, and hopefully generous Chicago masses, world class craft beers from three of the top 16 breweries in the country will be available all day starting at 11AM. Also in store during "Lions, Tigers and Beers" will be a raffle featuring a diverse selection of artwork, tattoo gift certificates, rare beers, brewery schwag, restaurant gift certificates and donations from local animal hospitals, with proceeds going directly to the Minnesota based Wildcat Sanctuary. The Northdown Cafe & Taproom
, in West Lakeview, hopes to raise between $5,000 and $10,000 for the big cats of the Sanctuary.
Operating on an extremely efficient budget, one fourth as large as animal sanctuaries of similar size, the Wildcat Sanctuary will stretch every dollar raised by the event. $2500 can feed an adult tiger for an entire year, so Northdown is hoping it can keep 3 or 4 "kitties" well fed through 2013. With over 125 large cats currently residing at the Wildcat Sanctuary, there is no shortage of hungry appetites. Fortunately, Northdown plans to make sure that the cats, and the patrons of the event, have plenty to eat and drink.
Owner Tom Lee: "The support from both local and international brewers has been amazing. Our event co-sponsors - 3 Floyds, Surly, and Mikkeller - have all chipped in some incredible beers that you might see once or twice a year, if that. We also have an amazing lineup of guest breweries that you'll be able to enjoy throughout the day. Specialty tappings run every two hours, all day long, from open until 9PM. There's simply too many great beers to mention."
With rare and limited run beers that you normally only see at national beer festivals "Lions, Tigers and Beers"
could become a must-make event for beer geeks all across the Midwest. To provide a solid base for the myriad brews on offer, Northdown will be serving up a steady flow of their locally sourced comfort foods, including their signature pork frites which were featured on WGN's "Chicago's Best" in April.
Patrons of the event will be able to lend their support to the Wildcat Sanctuary by purchasing raffle tickets as well as artist prints and limited edition t-shirts commemorating the event. In addition to the wide assortment of raffle prizes that will be handed out from noon to 10PM, the grand prizes of the raffle include: a six year flight of 3 Floyds Dark Lord Russian Imperial Stout, a Tour & Tasting of the Surly brewery with brewer Todd Haug, brewer signed tap handles from each of the sponsor breweries on a custom made handle holder, a flight of eight rare bourbons from West Lakeview Liquors and a Surly Rare Beer Collection. Raffle tickets, shirts and prints are all cash only.
