Citizens of the United States with close ties to the military live different lives. They have borne a different burden, either personally or through the support of a loved one. Few outside this community can understand the sacrifices made every day by this small group of Americans. When someone makes the ultimate sacrifice for the country, the heartfelt response if often overwhelming. As the days and months go by, however, the initial flood of support dwindles down as life continues. We often fall short of the mark when we remember the fallen. Fortunately, a new online community has arisen—TakingPoint—that created Post A Heart, a program of remembrance across the nation that knits together the diverse group of family, friends, and service members who knew the fallen.
Those who fall while serving America are diverse. They share no origin, race, religion, or education. What makes them unique among the dead is their decision to put our nation and its ideals ahead of personal safety and convenience. Whatever the political or strategic results of the conflict or cause of death, they should be honored by all American citizens. TakingPoint was founded and is run by veterans—we understand this importance, as do those who knew and loved the fallen. But units disband and return to their homes around the country, people grow up and get married or grow old and forget. We struggle to honor the memories of the best of us, which is why TakingPoint created Post A Heart.
America can live up to her commitment. Remembering the fallen defenders does not have to be something for the families alone. Post A Heart allows everyone to take part in honoring the fallen by posting stories, pictures, videos, and sharing this information on a network full of veterans who understand and appreciate the sacrifice of those no longer with us. TakingPoint also offers the opportunity to find other veterans who served with the fallen, or to add to the history of the unit by sharing information that will be seen by people across the nation and abroad. Post A Heart represents a chance to do right by the fallen, to celebrate their life and service, and to share stories of their valor with those who understand and will commemorate them alongside you.
