Many people have heard the words ďAmnesty InternationalĒ but not many fully understand what it is or what it means. We are surrounded by members of this organization in any location. Each time there is an offense against human rights it is assured that a member of Amnesty International will be watching. The group conducts research and attempts to create action to prevent the violation of human rights. They are a group of people who stand up for the people of the world and attempt to end needless suffering and acts of injustice towards each fellow man.
, a former co-president of Amnesty International while at Rice University was kind enough to share some thoughts about the organizationís current work. ďI think what they are doing is great. When I was co-president I put my heart and soul into it; just like most members do. Itís not something that you join just to be a part of. You join because you want to make a difference and you want to find solutions to these problems. I loved my time with the organization and still support them.Ē
It is people like Antigone Kostas
that are the driving force behind this worldwide organization. It is the youth of our universities that play an integral role. Like Antigone, this becomes their first initial exposure to the organization and to its deeds.
The organization was formed in London in 1961. It won the Nobel Peace Prize as an organization in 1977 for its efforts against torture. The battle never ends and Amnesty International will continue to be at the forefront of the fight for human rights.
She is continuing her service to our community today through Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Buffalo in Buffalo, New York.
