Meerut,A two day National Conference on Genes and Genomics: Qualitative and Quantitative Approach was organized by Shobhit University, Meerut. The conference emphasized on following areas :

1. Milestone in Genes and Genomics
2. From Epigenetics to Epigenomics
3. Role of Genomics in Agriculture
4. Role of Genomics in Health Sector
5. Quantitative Analysis of Genetic Data
6. Role of Probability and Statistics in the study of Genes and Genomes
7. Expectation and Decision making

The conference was inaugurated by Chief Guest Mr. Anurag Srivastava, Commissioner, Meerut Region, Shri Kunwar Shekhar Vijendra, Pro-Chancellor, Shobhit University and Prof. Anoop Swarup, Vice-Chancellor, Shobhit University by lighting the lamp and worshipping Goddess Saraswati. Prof. (Dr.) Rajiv Dutta, Director, SBT and Convenor, Genes and Genomics, delivered the welcome address and shed light on the importance of novel genome projects including the human genome project and wheat genome project. Prof. Anoop Swarup in his theme address explored the possibility of using the deciphered genome for improving animal health, developing new agricultural varieties and for sustainable environmental management. He also emphasized the need for improving the research on genes and genomics in developing countries where the research is these areas is in their infantile stage due to lack of resources.

Mr. Anurag Srivastava appreciated the initiative taken by the University and stressed on the need to organize more such events. Shri Kunwar Shekhar Vijendra, Pro-Chancellor, in his address emphasized that the research in Biotechnology using advanced techniques in Genes and Genomics are of prime importance for the upliftment of society.

The keynote speaker, Dr. Virendra Baranwal, Principal Scientist, IARI, talked about various viral diseases in plants, their detection and possible cures for them. At the end of the inaugural session, Dr. R. P. Agarwal, Pro-Vice Chancellor delivered the vote of thanks.

The theme address in the first technical session was given by Dr. R. C. Bhattacharya, NRCPB, New Delhi on Signal Peptides enrolled in innate defense response. This was followed by special lectures by Dr. Rekha Dixit on Physical Mapping and Sequencing on Tomato Genome and Dr. Punjab Singh Malik on DNA replication in Gemini Viruses.

Poster presentation competition was organized in which both out station delegates and in-house students actively participated. The delegates were treated to a cultural evening organized by the students of Shobhit University.

The first session of the second day started with the key note address by Dr. G. S. Randhawa, Senior Professor, IIT Roorkee, where he talked about the various milestones achieved in the research on Genes and Genomics. Prof. J. B. Singh and Prof. Irene Sarkar of Shobhit University also delivered lectures on Statistical tools in the study of Genes and Genomes.

There were several technical sessions in which students, research scholars, industry professionals and faculty members presented papers on diverse fields. Each session was enthusiastically received by the audience resulting in a brainstorming discussion and interaction.

Certificates to participants and winners of poster presentation competition were distributed in the valedictory function.

Directors of various sister schools-Prof. P.P. Singh, Director General, Prof. S.C. Agarwal, Prof. Sarkar, Prof. D.B. Rai, Prof. Ranjeet Singh, Prof. S.K. Asthana and Prof. J.B. Singh along with several dignitaries like Prof. S. K. Bhatnagar were present.
