Neuchâtel, Switzerland, 14 May 2012 : The Kell Process, offered by Lifezone Ltd., has brought a remarkable breakthrough in platinum group metals (PGM), precious metals and base metal concentrate processing technology. With enhanced metal yield, reduced power costs, ease of processing and environmental benefits, this highly efficient and simplified process offers producers an alternative to smelting of their flotation concentrates.

Briefing about the development of the process, the inventor of the Kell Process and director of Lifezone, Keith Liddell, said, “The Kell Process was conceived as a treatment route for concentrate from the South African UG2 platinum reef. The chromite contained in UG2 concentrates creates problems in smelting and limits are placed on the amount of chromite that flotation concentrates can contain which reduces flotation recovery of the platinum and other metals. The Kell Process solves this problem completely.”

Designed to remove the constraints in smelting, Kell Process has been fine-tuned scientifically to be robust and flexible. Now the operating conditions of the process can be modified according to the needs of the concentrate that required to be processed making the process applicable to other types of concentrate containing the base metals, nickel, copper and cobalt and also gold and silver.

Liddell further added, “The Kell Process consists of several commercially proven unit operations. The base metals, are first selectively removed by use of a pressure oxidation step during which the dissolution of PGM is minimized. The residue from pressure oxidation is then subjected to a thermal treatment to ensure efficient PGM recovery by subsequent chlorination. The process uses much less energy than smelting and does not produce sulphur dioxide emissions, making it more environmentally responsible to install ”
