The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is all set to make highway commute experience blissful. Soon there will be no traffic congestions near toll plazas on the highway, as the NHAI has decided to install high-end video surveillance system at the toll plazas for the real-time mapping of traffic congestion. As of now, the project has been taken up only for few major toll plazas of the country to take the quick action in times of heavy traffic flow.

In the next six months, The National Highway Authority of India will be installing the video surveillance system at ten major toll plazas of the country. If the project sees the light of success at these toll plazas then NHAI will extend the plan to another 200 toll plazas, which witness daily traffic flow of more than 10,000 vehicles.

This video surveillance system will be equipped with the hi-tech cameras that will ensure that the real-time information is being sent to the traffic control rooms at the regional offices (ROs) and at the time of emergency the same information will be sent to NHAI headquarters.
The idea behind this surveillance facility is to maintain the smooth flow of traffic near the toll plazas and avoid bottlenecks; the facility will be active around the clock. To establish this high-speed connectivity between the toll plazas and regional offices, the NHAI has already connected the respective regional office with high-speed internet network.

The NHAI?s man behind this hi-tech idea is their Chief General Manager (IT and Highway Operations), Mr Akhilesh Srivastava. While explaining this system he said that these cameras are programmed to send the time-stamped photos to the regional offices and NHAI?s Command Control Room at regular interval of 30 minutes. There will be an imaginary IP line set for the camera, and if the traffic queue crosses that line near toll plazas, then the cameras will automatically switch to video mode and start sending those videos to the regional offices at regular intervals along with alerts as per escalation matrix. If the queue is not cleared in an hour, the matter will automatically be escalated to the NHAI headquarters.

This is not it, the National Highway Authority of India has also signed up with empanelled ?drone agencies? to get the fast internet connectivity and drone surveillance to ensure the real-time survey of the highway project constructions. This will help NHAI to monitor the construction work from their headquarters and take the necessary steps whenever needed.

The NHAI has been taking all the necessary steps to ensure the transformation of the Highway Network of India as per the global norms. To make this infrastructure a reality, NHAI is employing advanced technology, hi-end traffic management system, wayside amenities, and also the equal job opportunities for all.
All these steps that NHAI is taking will help in the greater transformation and also help India to stand at par with the infrastructural standards of the other developed countries of the world.
