BMD Watchful for New Drugs in the Horizon for Cholesterol Related HoFh

A new drug Application has been submitted by Genzyme and Pharmaceuticals Inc., for mipomersen sodium (named Kynamaro), for the treatment of patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH). HoFH is caused by a rare genetic disorder and characterized by high cholesterol levels, specifically high LDL (bad cholesterol) levels. As this disorder is present from birth, like any other genetic disorder, atherosclerotic changes may begin early in life, resulting in aggressive heart disease beginning in childhood. The drugs and therapies used to treat that lowers LDL levels are not effective and the patients face significant risk of cardiovascular events.

Currently available therapies for HoFH work on clearing LDL and include LDL-aphereis (similar to dialysis) or liver transplant. Kynamaro targets the production of LDL and other lipoproteins to lower the LDL levels in blood. Kynamaro is another new addition to the new generation of personalized drugs that target specific conditions. Kynamaro may be used in treating patients with severe heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (Severe HeFH) for lowering their LDL levels in the blood. Genzyme’s application to FDA is supported by the largest clinical trial conducted to date in the HoFH patient population.
