Is the scalpel more effective than the medicines in treating diabetes? Is diabetes a curable disease? Answer to both the questions may be “Yes”, According to two recent studies published on last Monday.
One study published in New England Journal of Medicine by a team of researchers including Philip R. Schauer, M.D., Sangeeta R. Kashyap, M.D, shows that weight loss surgery is more effective than medication alone or the dieting plans. The two year study with 150 obese patients with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes, compared two types of weight loss surgery with traditional therapy. The team concludes “In obese patients with uncontrolled type-2 diabetes, 12 months of medical therapy plus bariatric surgery achieved glycemic control in significantly more patients than medical therapy alone. Further study will be necessary to assess the durability of these results”
The second study carried out in Italy, involving 60 patients with a history of type 2 diabetes. They were randomly grouped into two groups. One group underwent bariatric surgery and the patients in other group were given traditional medical treatments. In the two year follow up study it was found that "bariatric surgery resulted in better glucose control than did medical therapy."
Weight-loss surgeries are nothing new. Known as bariatric surgeries, they were performed since 1950s. Though there were unofficial reports in 1950s, that diabetes in the obese patients got cured after these surgeries, but it was considered a side-effect of weight loss and no follow up studies were carried out. So far diabetes is a non-curable disease and the medical therapies could only keep diabetes under control. Many of the drugs used in treating diabetes can cause weight gain that may aggravate the problem. The present studies are not conclusive and further studies will have to be done to before bariatric surgery is accepted as a cure for diabetes.
If accepted as a cure for diabetes, weight loss surgery may help millions of people suffering from diabetes, which has become a global epidemic. More than 220 million people are afflicted with type-2 diabetes, according to WHO. They will have to live with the traditional therapies till such time that bariatric surgery becomes a standard therapy for diabetes.
