Team of research-scientists at the Department of Chemistry of Lovely Professional University, Dr Tanay Pramanik and Dr Richa Gupta, has developed an eco-friendly & cost-effective solution for permanent removal of hardness from water. LPU scientists have proved that the usage of commonly found natural substances in abundance can convert hard-water into soft-water. The provisional patent application number for their innovative research work is 201711025361. LPU scientists are optimistic that their ?bio-filter? can eventually replace other costly devices available in the market. Presently, it is also being presumed that, in near future, LPU scientists? water softening kit can supply hardness free water to the society free of cost. LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal congratulated the innovative researchers at the university and inspired them to keep up their innovative & strenuous efforts for the benefit of one and all.
It is worth mentioning that ?Hardness of Water?, which is caused by dissolved salts of calcium and magnesium into water, is a matter of major concern for all human beings in particular and other creatures in general. What to talk about drinking purposes, hard water cannot be used fruitfully either for cleaning purposes or even for taking a bath.
Explaining about the demerits of hard water Dr Tanay says: ?Prolong usage of hard water for taking bath may cause various skin diseases as well as loss of hair. Moreover, the consumption of hard water may increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Effective formation of lather is also not possible by the soap if it is used with hard water, and also leaves stains behind when it dries from cloths or utensils. In addition, due to formation of scales, hard water may block the water supply pipeline and even cause serious issues in boiler operation in industry. As such, usage of hard water must be avoided and our solid scientific findings are on the lines of benefiting global society?.
In fact, conventional approach for removal of permanent hardness from water involves either non eco-friendly hazardous chemicals or complicated and costly nano-filtration methods. Many industrial and domestic water users are much concerned as when hard water is heated (such as in a home water heater) solid deposits of calcium carbonate can reduce the life of equipment; raise the cost of heating, lower the efficiency, and clog the pipes. In amazing comparison, this new procedure developed by LPU Scientist Tanay and his research team reduces the permanent hardness of water significantly just by applying a completely natural, extremely economic and simple bio-filter based on easily available natural substances like grass, leaves, petals and more.
