Sioux Falls, SD, September 14, 2017 - Sioux Falls Feminists announced their billboard campaign to raise awareness for domestic violence within America, but also to highlight resources for victims of domestic violence within the Sioux Falls area. The billboards were erected on Monday, September 11, 2017 across Sioux Falls, with a focus on troubling statistics and an aim to prompt viewers to help combat domestic violence. Some of the billboard statistics read:

- "South Dakota has one of the highest rates of domestic violence of all 50 states."

- "5,500 victims per day is over 2 million domestic violence victims per year."

- "Male partners also kill three women every day in the United States."

The billboards, funded through a local non-theistic (atheist, agnostic, humanist and freethinker) and secular-friendly group—the Sioux Falls Feminists, deliver frank and explicit messages of the pain of people who suffer abuse with a simple message: domestic violence is completely unacceptable and it's also illegal.

There are 26 billboard images in total. Of the twelve static billboards, six are located on Minnesota Avenue and the remaining six are on West 12th Street in Sioux Falls, SD. Digital billboards were erected at Minnesota Avenue and 41st Street, two on South Cliff Avenue, one at E. 10th Street and one final digital billboard on 26th Street. All billboards will play fourteen digital images over the next six weeks. Dale Hemming, president of Sioux Falls Feminists, urged people in Sioux Falls to take action against these abuses. "The people of Sioux Falls need to recognize how ugly domestic violence really is, and that it's important for them to understand that it's crucial that instances of domestic violence are reported and not kept a secret." Hemming also added, "It's important for us as a law-abiding society to provide support for victims—innocent citizens who have a right to a joyous future—and to help them realize that being a victim of domestic violence is not their fault. Statistics show that there are about fifteen instance of domestic violence that occur every day in South Dakota; about three criminals actions every day in Sioux Falls alone. Victims need to know where they can get protection from this abuse, and we've dedicated a large part of the Sioux Falls Feminists website to assist them with a list of different professional organizations that can assist them with filing reports and then also provide help and safety."

Hemming concluded, "I don't know any reason why people would have a problem with our message unless there is a reticence to bring such moral and ethics issues into the public square. Do people not want all citizens to be free to discuss awareness issues that directly impact their lives? It's time for us to bring these issues into the open and do something about them."
