SCU Health Leaders Receive Dana Goodrich Deane Scholarship

This year, the Dana Goodrich Deane Memorial Scholarship was awarded to its very first recipients. After a careful consideration process, the scholarship was awarded to Martha Makonen and Dylan Hernandez. The two students were ultimately selected for their academic records, passion for patient-centered healing and dedication to being a positive influence on their communities using integrative health care techniques.

Part of a $1.7 million endowment made by the Goodrich and Deane families ? Richard and Joanne Goodrich and Douglas Deane ? this scholarship was designed to honor SCU alumnae, Dr. Dana Goodrich Deane. A visionary in the field of healthcare and whole-person healing, Dr. Goodrich Deane represented the standard of excellence that SCU still strives for today and seeks to continue. The students who receive this scholarship should demonstrate this same drive for success; Makoken and Hernandez do just that.

When asked how she felt about receiving the scholarship, Makoken was understandably moved.

?I am so excited,? she stated, ?This generous gift will help me move toward achieving my dreams and goals of becoming an integrative health practitioner.?

Makoken?s goals include building an integrative pre- and post-natal care practice for women, focusing on patient-centered therapies as well as working alongside other doctors and specialists to give patients a comprehensive treatment experience.

Regarding her career aspirations, she said, ?My goal is to be 100 percent patient-focused.?

Hernandez was also thrilled to receive the scholarship award. With a goal of using the integrative healing techniques he has learned through SCU, Hernandez intends to work as a chiropractor and holds the same vision of patient-focused care for which the scholarship?s namesake was known.

?Receiving this scholarship means the world to me,? he says. ?I have an extreme passion for giving people their lives back. My education at SCU has taught me that my actions as a practitioner must align with my patient?s needs.?

The staff of SCU is overjoyed to see these students receive this exciting opportunity and looks forward to witnessing them making the best of the award to better the lives of future patients.
