The symposium, entitled Genomics Medicine: The Missing Link in Bench-to-Bedside Translation, centered on cancer genomics medicine.
Dr. Steppie, president and medical director of Associates in Dermatology, takes a deep interest in cancer research. He routinely participates in medical conferences and attends scientific meetings so as to keep his practice up-to-date with the latest findings.
The Genomics Medicine symposium was hosted by Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute at Lake Nona in March 2017. Speakers addressed such topics as:
> Cancer diagnosis and prognostication using genomic markers
> DNA sequencing
> Editing the genome
> Using genomics to guide medical treatments
The conference also offered information on incorporating genomics into a medical practice, and talking with patients and family about genomic testing.
Dermatologists such as Dr. Steppie typically identify and diagnose skin cancers by means of a visual exam of the skin; nevertheless, it is important to understand the genetic mechanisms that underlie how cancer develops and spreads. For instance, cancers such as metastatic melanoma may benefit from gene therapy targeting cells with particular mutations that contribute to the cancer.
Dr. Steppie diligently attends conferences like this one in his quest for breakthroughs that may benefit his patients.
