With all the news about Amazons success this past Christmas season, local mom and pop stores are scrambling to attract local consumers in an effort to make up for the losses to remote sellers. But one local directory experts says many of them are going about it the wrong way.
I see so many small, local shops just waiting it out, says a spokesman from FindUsLocal, a [local search directory] that uses GEO technology to match user's locations with customized results.. They believe that if they continue to do what worked in years past, the customers will find them, but unfortunately, thats not the way the world works anymore.
He points out that while business owners used to rely on the Yellow Pages and newspaper ads in the local paper, those methods arent effective anymore. People are online, he says. And when they want to find a local business, the first thing they do is look online. And if a local business isnt listed in the [local business directory](http://www.finduslocal.com/), chances are, theyre not going to be found.
He says that the top three things local shops can do to attract local customers is to make sure their website is optimized for mobil phone users, claim their business listing in a local business directory, and ask their existing customers to leave online reviews for them.
In the end, he says, Local business owners have to adjust their marketing efforts to conform with the way todays consumers look for and purchase products and services. And the best way to do that is to make sure their business is listed where it can be found.
