Sherman resident Cathleen Hoffman, M.D. has accepted a position with Skilled Wound Care, a national company that works with nursing homes and long-term care facilities to treat patients with pressure ulcer wounds. These wounds affect some 3 million mostly elderly or infirmed Americans each year, resulting in 60,000 deaths annually. In her new capacity, Hoffman will visit Dallas/Ft Worth area facilities to evaluate patients, work with staff on preventing wounds from developing and treating the condition.
Hoffman is among a growing number of physicians who are turning to this new frontier of medicine as they face challenges keeping their practices afloat. The number of Americans 65+ is the fastest growing demographic representing more than 40 million people or 13% of the population. That number is expected to double in the next 25 years thanks to aging baby boomers and longer life expectancy. A recent report revealed that the number of those with pressure ulcer wounds (now at an estimated 3 million Americans) is growing at an alarming rate ? 63% increase in the past decade alone ?at a cost to our healthcare system of $1 billion each year.
?I am delighted to join the staff of Skilled Wound Care,? said Hoffman, a former ob/gyn. ?My decision to change the course of my career is spurred by the demand for such specialized care, the satisfaction that comes from treating these vulnerable patients, the flexibility that allows me to set my own schedule without having to be on-call and the excellent compensation opportunities in the field.?
Hoffman says that pressure ulcer wounds often develop among the elderly because the skin becomes thinner and begins breaking down over time. When constant pressure is exerted to a particular area of the body ? mostly hips and buttocks ? or a lack of blood flow reaches the lower extremities, these painful wounds develop ? sometimes in as little as 2 hours. Statistics show that 67% of wounds are found on the hips and buttocks while 25% affect legs and feet.
?Interestingly, pressure ulcer wounds are often misdiagnosed and mismanaged even by trained medical professionals,? said Hoffman, who earned her medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center Medical School. ?The need for qualified wound care specialists is quickly growing so we hope to recruit more physicians in the near future.?
Her background includes serving on the Himalayan Health team as part of a travelling tent-based clinic that served the indigenous people in rural villages throughout the region, which is in Himachal Paradesh, India. She is a marathon runner and photographer on her off time.
