Virtuoso rock guitar player Tom Hess, has revealed his methods for playing guitar clean in a new online resource.

In his resource, Tom Hess identifies six ways guitar players can fix sloppy playing in order to clean up their technique and become great guitarists.

One of the biggest changes Tom Hess instructs guitarists to make is to begin focusing on eliminating noise that occurs from open strings. Hess tells guitar players to use both hands in order to mute any unused strings. Specifically, he tells guitarists to use their picking hand thumb to mute strings below the one being picked, and any available (picking hand) fingers to mute strings above the one being picked. To mute with the fretting hand, Hess recommends using the pad of the index finger.

Tom Hess also recommends improving picking efficiency by using directional picking to play scales. Hess says, ?this keeps your pick in the trench between the strings longer, reducing string noise while also making your picking motions more efficient.?

Hess also discusses the importance of playing on the tips of your fingers rather than the pads. This transfers force to the strings much better and requires less overall pressure, reducing the amount of energy needed to play a note.

To help apply the points in his resource, Tom Hess recommends that guitarists record themselves frequently and listen closely to the inconsistencies in their playing.

Hess?s online resource about playing guitar clean can be found on his website tomhess.net.
