Doctors at Columbia Asia, Ahmedabad, did a knee replacement surgery, successfully
Ahmedabad, 19th August 2016: Columbia Asia Hospital, Ahmedabad, has recently conducted a successful knee replacement surgery of a patient who visited the hospital with advanced arthritis, pain and, deformity. In addition, he was also obese and had cardiac complications.
Dr Amit Agrawal, Consultant-Orthopaedic & Joint Replacement Surgeon, Columbia Asia Hospital, Ahemdabad, said, ?Because of a sedentary lifestyle Sohan Ram (name changed to protect identity) gained a great deal of weight and was 126 kg when he visited us. Obesity was the primary reason for his deteriorating knee condition that prevented him from doing any physical exercise. This contributed to his cardiac problems. It took us four to five years to convince him to undergo the surgery, so as to get rid of the pain and to get back to a regular lifestyle. The operation was complicated because of his delicate health condition, but we managed to do it, without any associated problems arising.?
In their mission to provide the best possible patient care, Columbia Asia Hospital has developed a set of protocols that ensure the most successful outcomes. In the specific instance of joint replacement surgery, a set of important parameters have been laid down. These are referred to as P.H.O.E.N.I.X.
Elaborating on the concept, Dr Agrawal said, ?P.H.O.E.N.I.X. comprises all the advanced and logical principles of joint replacement surgery that gives cent percent results to patients in the form of joints that are properly-aligned, hi-flex (highly flexible), have overall balance, are efficient, fitted with individualized interventions, with attention to natural kinematics, and xtra care. The idea is simple: to ensure that at every stage the patient is given personalized care and attention for long-lasting results. We apply this concept in all our joint replacement surgeries using advanced techniques like navigation, patient- specific instrumentation and gender specific, high performance joints.?
Obesity affects the body in many ways, both in terms of physical and mental functioning. Over time, the strain that extra weight places on the body can result in problems like joint pain and arthritis. Eventually, wear and tear on the joints can become so significant that hips and knees may need to be replaced. Obesity is also associated with a number of co-morbidities, including several forms of heart disease. Diets high in unhealthy fats and calories and a reduced expenditure of energy in the form of physical activity are the most likely explanations.
Dr Maharshi Bhatt, Consultant-Orthopaedic & Joint replacement surgeon, added, ?Earlier due to lack of proper technology, pain was inevitable. But times have changed. Now with the help of advanced technology medical science can provide quick and long-term solutions to knee problems. One should not wait till the health condition is serious and should seek the guidance of the doctor at the very onset of any symptom?.
The patient, post surgery, is medically fit and can walk again. This will help him to improve his obesity and heart conditions. The patient has been counseled on ligaments and muscle strengthening exercises that help to promote joint health. ?I am happy that I underwent this surgery, and I really regret not having done it earlier. The ease I feel now will help me to be much more mobile than earlier,? said Ram.
