Mr Iker Bezares, production manager at the forge now recommends the use of Ervin Amasteel shot and grit following an initial trial that reduced consumption of abrasive at the CIE Legazpi forge by 22%.

The CIE Automotive group operates 79 manufacturing plants across 35 countries, employing over 23,000 people with a global turnover of more than ?2M. Key customers include, Renault, Chrysler, Daimler, Ford, Volkswagen, GM, Nissan, Caterpillar, DAF and MAN. The group is committed to becoming benchmark partners for their global automotive customers. They specialise in continuous improvement through innovation which results in high value-added production processes for their components. The new partnership with Ervin Amasteel has helped improve their process and meets their objective of having a reduced impact on the environment.

The Ervin technical support team carried out several inspections and made recommendations to CIE Automotive to improve the blasting process by optimising the operating mix and adjusting abrasive discards. For example, Ervin recommended adapting the dropbox discard in order to optimise the useful abrasive. Manuel Forn, Ervin Amasteel?s manager in Iberia, said ?Our experienced technical team evaluated this process and identified adjustments that mean CIE Automotive can achieve significant productivity improvements without compromising the quality of their finished parts?.

After the recommended changes had been made on the production line, CIE Automotive ran a 2 month trial comparing Ervin Amasteel S460 with a competitor product of the same specification. The result showed a dramatic improvement with Ervin shot from 310kg parts blasted to 383kg for each kg of abrasive used. As a result the Spanish forge has now switched 100% to Ervin Amasteel abrasive.

Further adjustments are now being made to decrease the roughness profile of the product which will improve the quality of the subsequent coating treatment. Mr. Bezares said ?We?re delighted to have changed to using Ervin Amasteel products because they have significantly reduced our costs in both in the blasting and coating processes. This helps us make CIE Automotive products more competitive in the automotive market.?
