Recent Study Finds Resistance to HIV Drug Emerging

Findings show that HIV strains aren't affected by the key antiviral drug. The antiviral drug was initially used to prevent and treat those with HIV.
The study group, a period of 1998-2015, compared HIV resistant patients in African countries and those in European countries. Of the selected cases in Africa, 60% had HIV resistance during the studies 17-year period while European countries had a 20% resistance. The results are extremely concerning," said Dr. Ravi Gupta, lead author.
1,920 HIV patients throughout the world were studied on why their HIV treatment had failed.
The studies states that the reason for the resistance to the drug may have come from improper administration. The way the drug is administered and the correct dosage wasn't strictly monitored.
If the user doesn't regularly receive the right dosage, high or low, then the virus can overcome the drug and become resistant," Dr Gupta said.
It was also suggested that those who are resistant to the HIV antiviral may be able to pass on this trait to others. "We certainly cannot dismiss the possibility that resistant strains can spread between people and should not be complacent. We are now conducting further studies to get a more detailed picture of how Tenofovir-resistant viruses develop and spread," Dr Gupta said.
This particular piece of information worries researchers. The ability to pass on the resistance has placed a lot of pressure on scientists to create a new cure for HIV. Some compared this situation to the current antibacterial problem. "We don't want to be in a situation like we have now with antibiotics where we're down to our last line of antibiotics and close to the pre-antibiotic resistance era," Professor Tachedjian said.
Current second line of HIV antiviral is more expensive and has more negative side effects.
