August 4, 2011, Bangalore: The first look of national award winning movie ‘I AM KALAM’, a unique initiative by Smile Foundation India, was unveiled to the students of Symbiosis Institute of Media and Communication, Bangalore during a glittering event at Symbiosis auditorium.
The children from Smile Foundation participated in ‘A Symphonic Rhapsody’, an event organized by the SIMC, Bangalore, and put up an exhilarating performance to a standing ovation from a jam packed auditorium. The children interacted with the B-School students, had lunch with them and spent the whole day at the campus.
‘I AM KALAM’ is the first film in the world produced by a development organization ‘SMILE FOUNDATION’. The movie ‘I AM KALAM’ is going to be distributed pan India by Reliance Entertainment and features Veteran actor Gulshan Grover, French actress Beatrice Ordeix and many talented actors. The child prodigy Harsh Mayar has already received accolades from across the world for his breathtaking performance in the movie and was awarded prestigious National award.
Speaking on the occasion Prof Chakravarti, Director, Symbiosis Institute of Media and Communication, Bangalore said, “We at SIMC have always believed in providing world class education to the young generation by sensitizing them to current concerns, trends and practices. Our students have always contributed to various NGOs across India as we have a mandatory NGO Internship in the course curriculum. This initiative by Smile Foundation in spreading the same message through the powerful medium of cinema is commendable. We at SIMC-Bangalore pledge our whole hearted support to their cause.”
Ms Smita Kalappa, National Director-CFC, Smile Foundation, Bangalore while unveiling the special preview said “Smile foundation is very proud to have conceptualized and produced a meaningful feature film like I AM KALAM. It is fate that has put us on the other side of the equation where we have got to enjoy a good education in good institutes. When we have realized this we can join the movement that is I AM KALAM and work towards eradication of child labour and help every child realizes his/ her dream”.

Awards and acclaim of I AM KALAM

With the newly won Audience Choice Award for Best Feature Film at IFFLA 2011 and the 58th National Award for the lead actor Harsh Mayar, I AM KALAM now has 12 awards in its kitty. Premiered at the 63rd Cannes Film Festival in Germany; the Don Quixote Prize of the International Cine Club Federations in Germany; Young Jury award at the International Film Festival of Indian in Goa; the Best Children’s Feature Film at the CMS International Film Festival Lucknow; Aravindan Puraskaram ( Best Debutant Director Award) at the Chalchitra Film Society, Kerala; the “audience Favourite” Award at the Barbican London Children’s Film Festival Award; a Specil Diploma for the Best Actor Work at Minsk International Film Festival Listapadzik; and a Special Mention at the Cinekid International Film Festival in Amsterdam and the Ale Kino International Film Festival in Poland.
